What is ReLEx SMILE LASIK?

ReLEx® SMILE is the first laser eye surgery procedure performed using only a single laser: the VisuMax femtosecond laser. The procedure is painless and does not require the flap typical of LASIK.

First, the corneal disc (lenticule) is prepared within the cornea using the VisuMax femtosecond laser. During this process, you will see a bright spot but feel very little. Immediately after the lenticule preparation, a small opening of 2 to 3 mm is made – also with the VisuMax. Through this opening, the surgeon detaches the lenticule and carefully removes it. The small incision is then checked again. Afterward, like most patients, you will be surprised at how quickly everything went and how little you felt. Due to the small size of the incision, no special precautions are necessary postoperatively; you can usually resume sports, wash your hair, or shower the following day.

WHAT’S NEW AT SMILE LASIK?

One advantage of the ReLEx® smile laser eye surgery procedure compared to LASIK is that the incision area is much smaller.

ReLEx SMILE is considered the next generation of laser eye surgery. With this “keyhole” method, no corneal flap is created and lifted – the procedure is performed through a tiny incision in the cornea, making it minimally invasive. This means that as little of the cornea as possible is affected, resulting in a very short healing process.

The VisuMax femtosecond laser from Carl Zeiss marks the tissue that will be removed to improve vision. Only the femtosecond laser is used. This method is relatively new and is only used in a few laser eye surgery clinics worldwide. VisuMax 800 smile PRO is used.

ReLex SMILE is currently used exclusively for nearsighted patients (without astigmatism). If these criteria are not met, the same results are generally achieved with Femto-LASIK surgery.
