Imagine a calm pond and throwing a stone into the water. You will notice that several concentric ripples form around the point of impact. Similar to this harmonious image, the structure of a multifocal lens is designed. Nine or twelve rings allow reading at distances of 30 cm or 40 cm, which corresponds to most reading distances, while the remaining optical distribution on the lens surface serves good distance vision. The concentric design of the lens optics allows two visual impressions from the eyes to be superimposed into a single overall image. This overlapping blur may be noticeable at first. The fact that our brain has learned from a young age to retouch certain blurs is what makes this principle function in the first place. <\/p>\n\n

Consideration of vision in daylight and at night<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The more different optical elements light has to pass through, the greater the loss that results directly from this. The same principle can be applied to different focal planes. The fine, concentric ring steps regulate the incidence of light (energy distribution) and the transition in favour of the individual visual zones. At night or at dusk, there is less light available. The pupils (iris aperture) dilate so that, despite the reduced light, enough information reaches the retina and vision in darkness is made possible. The artificial multifocal lens is designed so that, with a normally dilated pupil of around 2\u20133 mm in diameter, there is sufficient light stimulation for both distance and near focusing to function successfully. This makes it possible to read comfortably and see into the distance during the day. With widely dilated pupils (at night or in low light), the light is used for distance vision. In everyday life, this means that in poor lighting conditions, near reading becomes more strenuous, but, on the other hand, disturbing light sources such as headlights or traffic signals appear less intrusive. For daily use, this means: good lighting improves reading quality. <\/p>\n\n

When is the right time for a multifocal implant?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In order for the advantages of a multifocal lens to be used to full benefit, the eye should already be in a state of presbyopia. This is certainly the case from around the age of 50. In addition, by this time the eye has already undergone important physiological changes, which are favourable with regard to surgery on the eye\u2019s own natural lens. <\/p>\n\n

We have not yet succeeded in copying nature in all its perfection. A multifocal lens represents a very good compromise.
