My dental implants in Istanbul, Türkiye – Report from Tuesday, November 10, 2015

In April 2015 I attended an information day in Zurich, where initial inquiries were made and the entire process in Istanbul was explained to me.

My teeth looked terrible; I couldn’t laugh freely anymore, let alone have a long conversation. I slowly started to distance myself from those around me because I was becoming increasingly ashamed. I couldn’t wait to go on vacation with my girlfriend and child and finally get my teeth fixed at an affordable price!

My girlfriend and I booked the hotel and flight ourselves. On October 7, 2015, we flew from Zurich to Istanbul. At Istanbul airport, someone from the Acibadem pick-up service was immediately waiting for us with a sign bearing my name. We went straight to the Acibadem Fulya Hospital. I was greeted very warmly by a Turkish interpreter who spoke excellent German.

The treatment started right away. First, another X-ray, then I received a few injections of anesthetic in my mouth. The first injection stung a little, but I hardly felt the rest. They extracted four teeth and inserted screws for the implants, which was a big part of the process. The pain during the treatment was quite manageable, but if it became unbearable, you could let them know immediately, and the dentist would give you more injections. The interpreter was always present.

After the operation, I received an injection in my buttocks for the pain, which I found the worst part; it started to burn and I could barely walk. But that subsided within 10-15 minutes. Better that than having real pain from the surgery later. Then I was driven back to the hotel. Unfortunately, from then on I was only allowed to eat soup, yogurt, quark, etc.

On the afternoon of October 8, 2015, I was picked up from my hotel and taken to the hospital. I received more injections to numb my mouth, had a few root canals and fillings. Afterwards, their transport service brought me right back to the hotel.

On October 9, 2015, I had no appointments and was able to explore the beautiful city of Istanbul with my family. I also had no appointments on October 10, so we visited the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. On October 11, I again had no appointments, giving me plenty of time to explore the city. It’s very easy to get around without a car; there’s so much to see and do.

Our hotel was near Taksim Square, quite central in Istanbul. On October 12th, I was picked up from my hotel again. At the hospital, they extracted three more teeth and inserted screws for implants. The interpreter was always with me to translate. After the treatment, the transport service from Acibadem Hospital took me straight back to the hotel, and I was able to enjoy the rest of the day with my family.

On October 13th, the transport service from Acibadem Hospital picked me up from my hotel again and took me back to Acibadem Fulya Hospital. I had a few more root canals and fillings, and then I was taken back to the hotel. On October 14th, I received my temporary dentures. Of course, I was picked up from the hotel first and then taken back again.

I was finally able to laugh again… On October 15th, we were picked up at the hotel by the Acibadem transport service and driven back to Istanbul Airport. We arrived in Zurich in the afternoon. I get to go again in three months; I’m already looking forward to it.
