I had my eyes lasered! – Report from Friday, November 26, 2010
I had my eyes lasered because I had a very strong correction of minus eleven dioptres and was also losing more and more visual acuity. How did I come across Swisslasik? I first looked into eye surgery ten years ago. At that time, however, I was advised to wait, with the explanation that experience with eye laser technology was still too limited and that my correction was too strong for laser treatment. Half a year ago, I pursued the matter again in Switzerland and was told that my eyes would in principle be suitable for surgery, but not with this level of correction. Through my sister, who had the operation carried out at EyeSTAR in Istanbul, I became aware that there might be an option abroad. I immediately got in touch with Mr Karaagaçli. After a very pleasant conversation, I decided to go ahead with either laser treatment or a lens implant procedure, as it was still unclear whether laser treatment would be possible at all with my strong correction. As the departure date approached, my husband decided at short notice to come along as well. We were warmly welcomed at the airport and taken to the hotel, which is in an excellent location right in the middle of Istanbul’s main shopping street. The next day, as agreed, we were picked up punctually in the hotel lobby and accompanied to the clinic. The clinic is a five-minute walk from the hotel. In the entrance area, disposable shoe covers must be put on over the shoes. The waiting area is very bright and comfortably furnished. The reception is welcoming. In the morning, all examinations were carried out again very thoroughly, of course with German-speaking support throughout. During the subsequent consultation with the doctor, I was informed that a laser operation was possible, but associated with a certain residual risk of 1–2 per cent. Specifically, this meant that I might still need to wear glasses for driving or reading. The operation took place in the evening at a different clinic, as the equipment was temporarily out of operation due to a technical fault. However, the care provided by EyeSTAR there was also excellent. The operation went well and quickly, even though the lasering took over a minute due to my correction. The return journey to the hotel was rather uncomfortable, as my eyes were watering heavily and car lights were very dazzling. Once at the hotel, I lay down for a short while. Afterwards I felt so well that I went out for dinner and then went to bed early. The next morning, I was able to see everything clearly, something that had never been possible for me before. Istanbul is also a city with an enormous number of impressive sights. For two or three days, I had the sensation of a grain of sand in my eye, but it was all worth it, and I happily tell everyone that I have gained a new quality of life. After wearing glasses for thirty years, it is almost unimaginable to me how such a miracle of vision is possible. I would do it again at any time and almost regret not having done it earlier. After today’s visit to the ophthalmologist, one month after the operation, it is possible for me to manage without visual aids, despite having noticed some deterioration. The doctor recommends that I continue using the eye drops, as my eyes are very dry. My eyes are still not stable enough to draw a final conclusion.
